When people are on their deathbeds they never regret not having spent more times in the office, or having made more money, or not having bought more toys. They regret no having loved more, or spent more time watching sunsets and so on. The American statement that he who dies with most toys wins is as wrong and stupid as any statement could be. I’m not sure I even like the concept of winning and losing…

Many years ago when I was doing research on the biochemistry of the brain, I went to a conference on intelligence. One of the speakers who was an anthropologist living in an African village and studying the villagers. He mentioned that the students in this village did not do well at standardized tests since they would be shamed from shaming their friends by beating them. That may be a better attitude toward life and what’s important than our competitive winner takes all attitude…

Anyway, the point is that what matters is being happy and that is the function God gave us. Often the best question to ask yourself when resentment and lack of love sets in is, “Do I want to be happy or do I want to be right?”

***

First long practice period based on the review of day sixty five:

My only function is the one God gave me.

I have no function but the one God gave me.

During the meditation I got to the answer that we each have our individual function.

It is like your function is based on your karma.
Now that may be just because of what I believe. I mean that’s everything that I have heard from Plato, Hinduism and my own sense of psychological (spiritual) evolution tells me that karma exists, not as punishment, but as lessons so that in time we return to our source.
As A Course in Miracles says, “the time you take it is voluntary.” To me this means that we can get there through hundreds, thousands, millions, or even billions of lifetimes to get there.

Back to the message I got.
It’s not that our function is not happiness but perhaps happiness is different for each of us.
OK I’m clueless and don’t know what I’m talking about.
A Course in Miracles workbook said about these reviews that one should repeat the thought to be reviewed and wait for a message and my message was that we each have our individual functions.
Now each person’s function is that person’s God given function or functions…

***

Second long practice:

My happiness and my function are one.

All things that come from God are one. They come from Oneness, and must be received as one…

I know my happiness comes from love, compassion and most importantly from acceptance of whatever is.

I intuit that there’s more to happiness than happiness.
The above statement is not good English but I know what it kind of means.

I have to go back to my favorite mantra from Ram Dass:

I don’t know

The title resonates with me. Surely happiness is all that matters. Unfortunately we fight against our happiness by struggling for power, money, toys and other material things. We fight against our happiness by demanding that we must be right. We lose happiness through resentments, jealousies, and general lack of love.
We boost our happiness through unconditional [...]
