I am the light of the world

On day sixty one the first review section is over and for the last day of the year I’m the light of the world…

ACIM workbook mentions that this is the opposite of a statement of pride, of arrogance, or of self-deception. It is not the ego’s self-concept but the way you were created by God… It simply states the truth. To the ego, today’s idea is the epitome of self-glorification. But the ego does not understand humility, mistaking it for self-debasement. Humility consists of accepting your role in salvation and in taking no other. From the workbook:

As many practice periods as possible should be undertaken today, although each one need not exceed a minute or two. They should begin with telling yourself:

I am the light of the world. That is my only function. That is why I am here.

Then think about these statements for a short while, preferably with your eyes closed if the situation permits. Let a few related thoughts come to you, and repeat the idea to yourself if your mind wanders away from the central thought. Be sure both to begin and end the day with a practice period…

As it happens the book I picked up from my bookshelf is called Miracle in Maui by Paul Pearsall Ph.D. The part I started reading relates to today’s practice:

“we can all be miracle makers because are at the center of the universe where science and spirit meet… the center of the universe is not meant egocentrically or astrophysically but rather as a point of confluence for the higher and lower worlds, the visible and the invisible, the mundane ans the sublime…”

Once again as above so below, as below so above…
As in the microcosm so in the macrocosm, as in the macrocosm so in the microcosm.

I also want to note something about humility – saying the truth about our God given talents is not arrogance but humility – so long as we remember who is the source of those talents.

Everything we have is God’s and we are borrowers. Our talents are God’s talents and decent borrowers look after things loaned to us. We flourish and serve.

OK it’s my turn to say a few mea culpas. I have not looked after my God given talents and that is sacrilege. Thank God, God sees no blame. God loves all unconditionally. God’s love is my strength, my compassion  and my forgiving power.

I don’t like or believe in new years resolutions (as they are soon broken). So at this moment 2:41 p.m. December 31, 2009 I resolve that for the rest of my life I’ll thank God more for my God given talents, and I resolve to be more compassionate and forgiving and be a decent borrower of these talents.

The point is that as children of God (as the only begotten of the ACIM) we all have talents. We are all one and as one are part od God and the only Child of God.

Now, how do we show that we are the light of the world? In big and small ways. By smiling at all we meet and silently send them unconditional love.  We can have compassion for all living beings. We can clean our environment (large and small) – especially our mental environment by thinking peaceful thoughts…

We need to understand that being the light of the world means showing the way through our thoughts, through our words,  and through our actions…
