Day 8 – My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts

The thought for today just continues the thought for yesterday. Today we have: “My mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.”

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that my mind was preoccupied with thoughts of killing myself. Today my mind does not appear to be preoccupied with much at all.

I close my eyes for a minute and allow thoughts to arise but not much come. I’m going to do another practice just now and will write about it exactly the way it comes:

  • My thought: I’m sitting uncomfortably – I need to shift my position.
The affirmation: I seem to be thinking about my sitting position and being uncomfortable – but my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.
  • I move, shift my body and I remember a joke – and my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.
  • I think this is stupid.
The affirmation: I seem to be thinking that this is stupid – but my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.
So true. If I was in the present moment – it would just be – no judgment – all judgment is prejudgment and hence preoccupation with past thoughts.

I’ll write more when I do the next practice session:

  • I’m thinking that this too shall pass.
Affirmation: I seem to be thinking that this too shall pass – but my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.
  • I’m thinking it is wonderful to be alive.
Affirmation: It is wonderful to be alive – but my mind is preoccupied with past thoughts.

It happened naturally but I think it is important to apply the thought for the day to negative, neutral and positive thoughts without judgment. Altogether the less discrimination about how to apply the thoughts of the day the better.
