Creator male female

What gender is the Spirit, the Ultimate Reality, the Creator, God or whatever else you call it?

I used the word it so as not to prejudge the situation.

In Persian we do not have he she or other gender based language constructs. So whenever I have asked the gender of God from people who only speak Persian, they reply, “Don’t be ridiculous God does not have a gender.”

However, in male dominated societies people call God a male. But is this so?

Before I answer that I need to add that in many wisdom traditions and mystical systems people talk about God with a face (that’s to say God with personality) and God without a face (apersonal God). The apersonal God has no gender and is totally abstract. But at times people need the Godhead to be associated with a person. What then?

In Genesis one – the Creator of the universe is called the Elohim. Elohim is etymologically an interesting word. It is a plural word (Gods not God) with a masculine ending. However, the singular part of Elohim is a feminine God. Moreover further on the Elohim create Adam (not an individual but the species human being in the abstract as a soul with Spirit) in own image: Male/female.

Again we see that God is male/female (not he) as is the idea (Platonic idea or archetype) human species. Later God cleaves Adam and splits the male female from each other.

This cleaving myth is repeated independently by Plato in his Symposium.

Now for the following quot from Paramahansa Yogananda:

  • In the great saints we see combined the ideal masculine and feminine qualities. Jesus was like that, so were all the masters. When you have attained that perfect reason-feeling equilibrium, you will have learned one of the major lessons for which you were sent here.
  • [] the basic nature of the soul is spiritual.
  • You are a soul made in God’s image… [] remember always, “I am neither man nor woman; I am spirit.”

Now from the words of Jesus in the Gonstic Gospel of Thomas:

  • When you make the two one, and when you make the inside like the outside and the outside like the inside, and the above like the below, and when you make the male and the female one and the same, so that the male not be male nor the female, female… then will you enter the kingdom.
